Do you ever see a dress (or scarf, or pair of shoes) and think that it’s pretty much perfect?

Well, that’s what I thought when I saw this dress. I love the colour, I love the shape, I love the architectural zig-zag seams, I love the little sleeves, I love the weight of the fabric.

It’s so perfect on its own, that you wouldn’t need to pair it with much else. I’d add a chunky vintage bracelet, a woven bag, and a pair of heels and call it a day.

It’s the Diane von Furstenberg Trapp Dress. Too bad it’s £162.50 (on sale, even).

A couple commenters took issue with the price tag of the Shoshanna sheath dress featured in the retro chic workwear look.

While I stand by the dress because I think some people (including myself) splurge on items every now and then, I took the hint and gathered up some affordable sheath options for the office (plus one more expensive choice I couldn’t resist).

    1. Lemonade floral sheath dress, $79 (sale price) at Jones New York.

    2. Primitive brushstrokes print sheath dress, $89 (sale price) at Ann Taylor.

    3. Sheath dress, $148 at Anne Klein.

    4. Cap sleeve sheath dress by Tahari, $128 at Macy’s.

    5. Ruffle neck cotton sheath dress, $158 at Ann Taylor.

    6. Fitted linen sheath dress by Lotusgrace, $375 at Saks Fifth Avenue.

    7. Sleeveless embellished sheath dress by Jones New York, $148 at Lord and Taylor.

There’s some good info in this cute infographic on career fields that are projected to grow into 2016. Most unexpected? Performance Makeup Artist. Where did that come from? The others aren’t very surprising.

One funny thing: On the “Extinct Jobs” list, there is Elevator Operator. Except, until a few months ago, a friend had an elevator operator in her building. The building only recently switched to an automated elevator. So… maybe not entirely extinct, yet!

Okay, so this is actually supposed to be a regular Monday feature, but I was having some Photoshop trouble so… here’s a special Tuesday edition!

Anyway, today’s inspiration is a color as modern as it is timeless: camel. Inspired by a photo from The Sartorialist, as seen below. She wears it layer upon layer, but you don’t have to be so bold. It’s a sophisticated hue for work, and I love it paired with cranberry or navy.
    First, the inspiration:
    from The Sartorialist
Next, options to try it yourself:

    1. Catherine Malandrino Wool Jersey Dress, $475 at Net-a-porter / 2. Melie Bianco Amelia bag, $69 at Piperlime / 3. Camel Felt Floppy Hat, $50 at Topshop / 4. Softwashed Wool Blazer, $70 at J.Crew / 5. Dieppa Restrepo Penny Loafers, $240 at Gargyle / 6. Camel Skinny Belted Pencil Skirt, $70 at Topshop / 7. Corso Como Delicious Pumps, $90 at Piperlime

It is blistering cold here on the east coast, and all I could think of when dressing this morning was layering the warmest clothes possible for my walk to work. I can’t wait for warmer weather, when style won’t be taking a backseat to climate. What about you? Do you get into a seasonal funk?

To remind myself of more stylish times, I put together this post on tie neck blouses. I love the retro glamor of these tailored tops.
    First, the inspiration:
Jason Wu Spring 2011 / Ever-work chic Michelle Obama / Thandie Newton
Next, options to try it yourself:

Inspiration Monday: Fit to Be Tied
    1. Purple Print Pussy Bow Blouse, $70 at Topshop / 2. Only Style Remains Tie Neck Blouse, $32.99 at Rouche / 3. Dr Denim Tie Neck Blouse, $68.96 at ASOS / 4. Pussybow Blouse, $51.72 at ASOS / 5. Cool Ranch Top, $39.99 at ModCloth / 6. Stallion Stampede Top, $59.99 at ModCloth / 7. It’s in the Zag Top, $39.99 at ModCloth / 8. Yellow Spot Pussybow Short Sleeve Blouse, $75 at Topshop / 9. So this post basically prompted me to spend money this weekend. On Saturday morning, I was thinking of what the Monday inspiration would be — and browsing through The Sartorialist, I found these lovely photographs of women in shirtdresses. Shirtdresses are so springlike, I thought the style would be great inspiration. Then I went clothes shopping for the first time in ages and came across the shirtdress pictured at left at Anthropologie, on sale! So I obviously had to purchase it.

So now I have a great new dress to wear to work. I’ll replace the magenta sash with something more conservative, probably with either an extra thick or extra skinny black leather belt. The dress is gorgeous — it’s silky, with a full skirt with mini pleats.

  • Inspiration Monday: Skinny Belts

    Posted on 15/02/2015 by | 0 comments

Good morning! Hope you all had great weekends. I checked out this art opening on Friday and was very impressed. My friends and I spent a good 15 minutes debating how the artist cut the meat so precisely. Wouldn’t you like your restaurant steak shaped like Alfred Hitchcock, or Texas?

I have two skinny belts, but I must admit I’ve never worn them to work. These looks, though, have inspired me to pair mine with a long wool cardigan and trousers.

Navy and gold is such a classic combination, and Olivia P. looks tres sophisticated pairing the colors with two more neutrals — tan and caramel. The leather paneling on her skirt gives it an edge. I managed to find a navy skirt with leather detailing that you could actually wear to the office.

There are tons of options if you want to replicate Olivia’s collar necklace, but I like this one: geometric and very art deco.

    Oasis sparkly top, $65
    Raoul leather skirt, $335
    Jigsaw satin flat, £119
    Tory Burch tote handbag, £227
G by Guess gold tone jewelry, $90
    TopShop necklace, $30
Bex Rox vintage cuff bracelet, $240

Here’s what I’ve pinned to my Workwear Board… and here’s how to make it yours.

I love this look. The billowy, wide leg trousers set in the simplicity of just black and white. You don’t need a ton of bells and whistles to look put together. For this look, you really can just shop your closet (if you have the wide leg pants, which make this look), but you can also see my suggestions below. I’m drooling over the Chloe pants.

    Floral shirt, $70
    Chloé flannel pants, $595
    Zara leather pumps, $20
    Ivanka Trump flap bag, $120
Vanessa Mooney wire bangle bracelet, $250

Ivanka Trump is the newest celebrity to offer her own line of shoes. Jessica Simpson’s line has been wildly successful (people say they’re actually very comfortable), and now Ms. Simpson is rumored to be worth $1 billion. So I can understand the desire to jump on THAT bandwagon.

The truth is… I actually like Ivanka Trump’s shoes. Whereas Jessica Simpson’s shoes are trendier, more “going out”-style, Ivanka Trump’s work for the office.
